W. G. Loggie Residence

W. G. Loggie Residence is a two-storey Foursquare residence with Classic Revival and Queen Anne influences. It is located on Manse Street within a grouping of period homes in the former Village of Loggieville, now the City of Miramichi.

W. G. Loggie Residence is designated a Local Historic Place for its architectural significance and for its representation a period of housing development and economic growth in the community.

W. G. Loggie Residence was built for William G. Loggie in 1899. He worked as a mill supervisor for A & R Loggie Co., the principal employer of the village. This Foursquare residence represents the introduction of basic or mail order floor plans that became popular at the turn of the century. These accessible plans made it possible for the working middle-class to procure homes of an architectural design that was economical and more restrained in design to the typical housing type of the late 19th century. This residence demonstrates the flexibility of the Foursquare design through its limited use of Classic Revival and Queen Anne details, without exclusively adhering to either.

The character-defining elements of this Foursquare design include:

- narrow and long rectangular form and massing, maximizing the use of the narrow lot;

- gable roof;

- single-storey bay window, off-center entrance and wrap-around veranda that create a typical asymmetrical Queen Anne front façade;

- two-storey bay on the northwest side;

- wooden shingle cladding;

- gable window opening with rounded vertical opening;

- placement near street;

- Classic Revival front gable pediment with eave brackets painted in contrast colour.
