Blake House

Blake House is located on the main street in the village overlooking the mouth of the Miramichi River, the former Village of Loggieville. It is a one and a half storey traditional vernacular home, circa 1834.

The heritage value of the Blake House lies in its architecture. It is an example of the typical form, massing and style of traditional vernacular dwellings within the Miramichi area built circa 1830-1880.

Blake House is designated a Local Historic Place for its association with its resident Robert Blake and with A. & R. Loggie Co.

Robert Blake was the first postmaster of Blake Brook (later known as Black Brook, then Loggieville) having served the Village from 1863 until 1877, when his health began to fail. It was often customary to name the Post Office after its first postmaster in rural settings. He was also a direct descendant of the legendary Charlotte Blake, 'Mother of Tabusintac', who was one of the earliest British settlers to the area.

The heritage value of the residence also rests in association with the A. & R. Loggie Co. who later purchased the residence. A. & R. Loggie Co. was an important dealer in fish and a producer of lumber. Blake House was used as a cook house for their workmen. Company heads, brothers Robert and Frank Loggie, built their homes in the mid 1890's flanking the Blake House. Due to concerns over the threat of kitchen fires, meals for these two new residences were prepared at the Blake house by a housekeeper who lived there. The Blake House would become know as the ‘Cook House’ for this reason.

- gable roof of medium pitch;

- center front gable dormer situated above and below roofline;

- symmetrical facade with balanced window and door placement;

- glassed-in porch extends across front of residence.
