47 Fleet Street

47 Fleet Street consists of a front-facing gable 2 ½ -story Greek Revival residence with attached barn located on the north side of Fleet St.

47 Fleet Street is designated as a Local Historic Place because it is a good example of Greek revival residential architecture from the late 19th century. This residence still exhibits some of the key identifiers of this architectural style, such as an overall rectangular massing, returned eaves, bay windows, gabled dormers and attached barn.

The location of the residence is significant. Like many prominent residences of the time, this dwelling was located within easy walking distance to the Intercolonial Railway offices and shops. The I. C. R. employed a significant portion of Moncton’s population during this period and it continued to do so into 1960’s.

47 Fleet Street is also designated for its association with the Welsh (Walsh) family. Thomas F. Welsh was a long time machinist for the I. C. R. His son, Thomas H. Walsh, would eventually become an accountant for the I. C. R. after many years of service as a clerk for the railway. This residence stayed in the Welsh (Walsh) family for approximately 100 years.
