8 Church Avenue

8 Church Avenue, commonly known as the Mark Hayward House, is a light blue two storey Dutch Colonial house located on Church Avenue, facing the Rothesay Common to the south, located directly beside St Paul’s Church, in Rothesay.

8 Church Avenue is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture.

8 Church Avenue is recognized for the architectural style of the house. It is a good example of the Dutch Colonial style from the 1920's. The tell-tale gambrel roof and overall massing and design still reflect this style. It is one of only two houses on the Common to be built in the 1920’s. It was probably built around 1929 by Rothesay master builder Joseph Henderson. Henderson built approximately 32 houses in Rothesay, the first having been built in 1901, and the last probably in the 1930’s.

The character-defining elements as reflected in the Dutch Colonial revival style of 8 Church Avenue include:

- rectangular 2-storey massing;

- gambrel roof with shed dormer;

- symmetrical facade;

- decorated entry porch with pediment supported by square column pairs;

- symmetrical fenestration of rectangular windows with entablatures and shutters;

- clapboard siding.
