18 Hampton Road

18 Hampton Road is a large white two storey Italianate style house with gray-blue trim. It is situated at the corner of Grove Avenue and Hampton Road and overlooks the Rothesay Common to the west in Rothesay.

18 Hampton Road is designated a Local Historic Place for its association with one of its former occupants and for its architecture.

18 Hampton Road is recognized for its association with its former owner, Clifford McAvity, the president of T. McAvity and Sons, a Saint John metal manufacturing firm established in 1834 and known for its patent for the first fire hydrants in Canada.

18 Hampton Road is also recognized for its architectural style. The two-storey house is an example of the Italian Renaissance style. The rectangular massing, the fenestration and the brackets under the eaves are key elements of this style. It is also one of only two houses built in the 1920’s on the Rothesay Common, a reflection of the prosperity of the post-war period.
