David Anderson House

David Anderson House is located on King George Highway in the former Village of Douglastown on a landscaped corner property. This Foursquare or Classic Box design was a style made popular through Mail Order Houses at the turn of the century.

David Anderson House is designated a Local Historic Place because of its architectural significance as a Foursquare design.

David Anderson House is a good example of the Foursquare style situated on a narrow lot. The efficient square massing of the house makes the best use of limited civic lot space. Details such as the bay windows, central oval window and cornice brackets helped to embellish the plain Foursquare design. The lot and the Foursquare style influenced the living space in the home. Built in 1908-1909, in an area of earlier dated homes, much of the extensive interior wood detail on the main level is identical to Mail Order kits available at the time. David Anderson, the owner of the house, was a carpenter by trade.

The character-defining elements relating to the Foursquare style residence include:

- narrow lot;

- form and massing of a Foursquare design;

- hipped roof with central chimney slightly askew;

- wide eaves and continuous brackets, cornice and dentils in contrasting colors;

- clapboards with corner boards and capitals;

- decorative oval window located central on front elevation;

- elevated front entrance vestibule central on veranda;

- side bay windows embellished with cottage windows with upper stained glass panels to accommodate late day sun.
