124 Connell Street

124 Connell Street is a large 2 1/2 storey blue-grey clapboard High Victorian home on an elevated lot on Connell Street in Woodstock. The local historic place designation applies to the building.

124 Connell Street is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for its occupant.

124 Connell Street, built circa 1868, is considered to be the best example of High Victorian architecture in Woodstock. The house was built on land that was originally part of the grounds of the Honourable Charles Connell House. It is possible that the house was a gift to his son, Dr. Charles Pitt Connell.

The house is also recognized for being the home of Dr. Charles Pitt Connell, son of the Honourable Charles Connell. He was a prominent businessman who owned riverboats that once provided transportation and deliveries to Woodstock.

- clapboard siding;

- High Victorian decoration including gable trim, window hoods and mouldings;

- two-story bays;

- porch with pilasters;

- 6/6 storm windows on the first story of ell;

- main entrance facing the St. John River.

The character defining elements of the interior of the building associated with High Victorian architecture include:

- cherry wood and butternut decoration throughout including ceiling, door, and window mouldings, baseboards, archways and wainscoting; wide cherry staircase with heavy decoration including panelling, newel post, pendants and knobs on join posts;

- coloured frosted glass Gothic window at the first landing of staircase;

- hardwood flooring throughout;

- fireplaces in many rooms; sliding doors in double parlour;

- some serpentine walls;

- mahogany louvered shutters in dining room.
