Tabagie Centre-ville

Built in the early 1900’s, Tabagie Centre-ville is a Dutch Colonial style commercial and apartment building located on J. D. Gauthier Boulevard. This two-storey structure with a basement was used as a dwelling until 1980, when it was converted into a commercial and apartment building by new owners. It is located in the oldest part of the Town of Shippagan.

Tabagie Centre-ville is is designated a Local Historic Place for its historical interest. It was one of the first dwellings built in the heart of the old downtown of the Town of Shippagan. Mr. Thomas McIntosh had this magnificent home built for himself in the early 1900's. Since 1980, the building has been used to house commercial establishments.

It also has heritage value because of its architecture. It is a very fine example of the Dutch Colonial style, which first appeared in Canada in the early 20th century. This style is apparent in elements such as the gambrel roof and the dormers crossing the eaves.

Some additions were made to the original building in 2003, in the back and in the right front part of the façade.
