Codys Women's Institute Hall

Codys Women’s Institute Hall is a landmark located at the intersection of Cody Lane and Route 710 in the community of Codys. It consists of a late 19th-century wooden, Gothic Revival structure.

Codys Women’s Institute Hall is designed a Provincial Historic Site for its architecture and its association with the Women’s Institute.

Constructed in 1870, originally as a fraternal lodge, this Gothic Revival structure is significant as a typical example of late 19th century community buildings located in villages throughout New Brunswick.

The Codys Women’s Institute Hall is also recognized for its association with the Women’s Institute. Since 1927, the Women's Institute has played an important role in the home and farm economy as well as in the social history of New Brunswick. The Women’s Institute movement in Canada had a major influence on the life of the women in rural areas through educational programs and providing information to women about issues and events of concern to them and their communities.

- rectangular plan with sidewall entrance;

- exterior finish consists of butt nailed clapboard with plain corner trim;

- medium pitched gable roof, with boxed cornice and decorative eave brackets;

- windows consist of tall narrow double hung windows, with entablature and brackets, and plain side trim;

- main windows at front and side elevations consist of triple windows with central window of 4/4 lights, and side windows of 2/2 lights;

- interior consists of large open hall with high ceiling, an elevated stage at south end, with kitchen and washrooms at the back of the hall.
