Central Bank

Central Bank is a two-storey brick and sandstone Greek Revival institutional building. This former bank building is located on a corner lot on Wellington Street in the City of Miramichi.

Central Bank is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for being the earliest bank building in the area.

Central Bank is recognized for being a good example of Greek Revival institutional architecture in the Miramichi area. The Greek Revival style is apparent in such details as the building’s form and massing, the flat sandstone window sills and lintels, as well as the sandstone quoins. This brick building was constructed in 1856.

Central Bank is also recognized for its association with the early banking industry in the Miramichi area. Its construction date makes it the earliest bank building in the region. It later housed the Bank of Montreal, as well as various other businesses. Father Morrisey Medicine Company operated and made medicines in this building from 1908-1910.

The character-defining elements that describe the Greek Revival architecture of Central Bank include:

- rectangular two-storey form and massing;

- hipped roof;

- symmetrical fenestration of rectangular windows;

- brick exterior walls;

- sandstone quoins;

- continuous beltcourse of sandstone located at second level;

- sandstone lintels, eaves and sills;

- narrow masonry pointing;

- wide front entrance with simple transom and sandstone lintel.
