Carvell House

Carvell House (A. G. Dickson House) is located on the edge of the downtown business area in the former Town of Chatham. It is a two and a half storey Classic Box style home completed in 1915.

Carvell House was designated as a Local Historic Place for being a good example of the Classic Box style of residential architecture. The massing and design elements of this two and a half story residence reflect this style. It was constructed in 1914-1915 by W. & R. Walsh.

Carvell House is also designated for its association with Hugh Hammill Carvell and A. G. Dickson. Hugh Hamill Carvell was a local alderman and subsequent owner of the Ullock Livery Stable located a short distance up the street from his home. A.G. Dickson, a successful farmer, an advocate within the agricultural community and a local mortgage lender eventually acquired the home as his residence in 1930. During his residency, Dickson was active in local politics as alderman, president of the Highland Society. He was an active member and trustee of the church he attended. He also held the position of vice-president of the Maritime Stock Breeders Association for NB.

The character-defining elements that describe the exterior of this Classic Box style architecture include:

- building form and massing of a Classic Box style with ell in rear;

- full width veranda on main level supported by Doric columns with pediment over central entrance;

- smaller pedimented front veranda on upper level off centered from lower, supported by smaller doric columns;

- side front bay extending to upper level;

- bay on west sidewall trimmed with heavy wide moulding;

- front entrance door with original owners surname letter etched in glass;

- narrow wooden clapboards painted white;

- hipped roof with side hipped dormer;

- steel roofing with unique iron cresting horns on ridgelines and peaks.
