Skelton House

The Skelton House is an elaborately detailed Craftsman-style house located on the north side of Spadina Avenue just west of downtown Chilliwack, British Columbia. The historic place includes the house.

Skelton House has historic value for representing the residential and commercial development and expansion of Chilliwack in the years prior to World War I. It was a prominent site opposite to the original Fair Grounds at the corner of Spandina Avenue and Stanley Street. The historic place has social value for its connection to the Skeltons, Robert B. Skelton and his wife Susan (Cuthbert) Skelton, a well-known entrepreneurial and socially active Chilliwack family. The Skelton House also has aesthetic value as an example of Craftsman-style architecture.

Elements that define the character of Skelton House include its:

- original location in a formerly-rural neighbourhood near downtown Chilliwack

- association with nearby cultural and recreational centre

- residential form, scale and massing as expressed by its one and one-half storey height, symmetrical massing with asymmetrical gable dormers on each side

- wood frame construction

- features of the Craftsman style such as full front verandah with ornamental railing supported by tapered piers, multi-level cross-gable roof with brick chimney, exposed rafter ends, inset second floor balcony and ornamental triangular eave brackets

- recessed second-storey balcony

- original multi-paned wood windows in a variety of types and configurations
