Carmichael House

The Carmichael House is a one and one-half storey, wood-frame Craftsman Bungalow, located in the Chilliwack Proper neighbourhood, close to downtown Chilliwack. The historic place includes the house.

This site holds historical and aesthetic value.

It is historically important though its association with early owners who were prominent community members. The first owner of the house was F. Maude Carmichael, the daughter of Chilliwack's first mayor (Sam Cawley). Later, from the 1920s to the 1940s it was owned by the Brice family. The elder Brice was a municipal clerk and his two sons served and died in World War 2.

The site holds aesthetic value as an early 20th-century residence located adjacent to downtown Chilliwack and an example of Craftsman-style architecture.

The Character-Defining elements of this site include its:

- Original location on Spadina Avenue in Chilliwack's historic residential core

- set back from the street in line with other house of similar vintage on either side

- residential scale and form as expressed in its one-and-one-half storey height (plus basement) and front porch

- large, side-gabled roof with deep eaves, facia boards with notched ends, tongue & groove soffits and knee brackets

- large, deep front porch with heavy, square porch columns

- original bands of double-hung wood sash windows with divided-light upper sashes and early wood storm windows

- original wood window and door trim

- projecting wood window sills

- cedar shingle cladding throughout

- two tall prominent brick chimneys (now stuccoed) - one internal and one end-wall

- original partially glazed front door.
