United Baptist Church

United Baptist Church, a small wooden church, is a Picturesque structure inspired by the Gothic Revival movement. It is located on Court Street in Grand Falls.

United Baptist Church was designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture.

The architecture of Atlantic Canada’s Baptist churches was strongly influenced by the builders of ships and farms. The small, simple United Baptist Church was built in 1905 by the community and is still located on its original site. Its Picturesque architecture is suggestive of England’s Gothic Revival style and is a good example of rural religious architecture from the early 20th century in the Grand Falls area.

The character-defining elements of United Baptist Church include:

- rectangular plan, with a small porch on the front façade;

- plain entrance door opening onto a vestibule, lit by two windows on the sides;

- gable roof accented by brackets below the eaves;

- lower rear roof, defining the chevet;

- exterior cladding of long wooden boards painted white, the era’s preferred colour;

- Gothic arch sash windows topped by hood mouldings, giving the windows a touch of elegance and refinement;

- location on its original site.
