Description

The Monument is a Municipal Heritage Property located approximately 13.5 kilometres north of the Village of Buchanan on a portion of the SW-14-33-6-W2 in the Rural Municipality of Buchanan No. 304. The property features a cement cross constructed in 1919.

Heritage value

The heritage value of The Monument lies in its association with the homesteaders who settled this area. Following the Ukrainian tradition of constructing religious monuments to mark personal milestones or important events, Frank Tulik built a wooden cross on his homestead shortly after arriving there in 1903. Tulik dedicated his monument to the early pioneers in recognition of the sacrifices they made in coming to Canada. In 1919 Tulik replaced the wooden cross with the present structure, a durable cross cast in concrete. The monument has since become a prominent local landmark.
