Horizon Community Church Centre

Horizon Community Church Centre is a Municipal Heritage Property occupying one full block in the former village of Horizon, located approximately 30 kilometres west of the Town of Ogema. The property features a white, wood-frame church that was built in 1928.

The heritage value of Horizon Community Church Centre lies in its role as the only church in Horizon since 1928, and as the only Roman Catholic church remaining in the Rural Municipality of Bengough No. 40. Originally constructed as St. Cunegunda Roman Catholic Church, this building served as a church until 1991 when services were moved to Bengough. It was later purchased by the “Horizon Community Church Centre” group and converted to serve as a Community Hall and Church.

The heritage value of Horizon Community Church Centre also rests in its architecture. With optimism typical of the late 1920s, local parishioners decided to build a large church to replace the multi-purpose hall that had served as a church since 1915. They contracted Albert and Charles Mehnke of Ogema, who had constructed many large buildings in the district, to build a new church. By 1928 the structure was complete. A centrally-placed bell tower and steeple built into the front of the church provide entry into the building. Regularly positioned rectangular windows with rounded window heads and decoratively placed glass, generously illuminate the church’s interior, which is distinguished by a vaulted ceiling and rear organ loft.
