Fred Langan Residence

The Fred Langan Residence is a wooden two-storey wooden Italianate dwelling. It is located on Horsfield Street in Trinity Royal Heritage Preservation Area of Saint John.

The Fred Langan Residence is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for its association with its former occupants.

The Fred Langan Residence recognized for being representative of the rebuilding period after the Great Saint John Fire of 1877 destroyed two thirds of the city. Built circa 1878, this dwelling is an example of Italiante residential architecture from a collection of residential buildings built between 1877 and 1881. The elements and design of the Fred Langan Residence demonstrate that the city was going to be rebuilt as well or better than the city that was lost. The building was named after its original occupant, Fred Langan.

The Fred Langan Residence is also recognized for its association with E. Murray Olive. Mr. Olive resided in this home for a short time in the early 1900's. He was Chairman of the Board of Assessors for the City of Saint John for 20 years. At City Hall, he had the task of assessing taxation of all residential and commercial buildings in the city, which he performed alone for several years before two other members were appointed to the Board of Assessors.
