Former Site of the Milne-Coutts & Co. Granite Shed

A short grass road at the west end of the Lower Bridge, right off of South Street in the Town of St. George leads to the river bank and to the Former Site of the Milne-Coutts & Co. Granite Shed. The road is maintained in its original state. Remnants of the wharf and building foundation are visible.

The Former Site of the Milne-Coutts & Co. Granite Shed is designated a Local Historic Place for its association with a significant stage of industrial development in St. George.

Milne-Coutts & Co. was the first and the last of the ten granite businesses to operate in St. George from 1872 to 1954. It represents the arrival of the "Industrial Revolution" to the Town of St. George. It was the only granite-works shed located at the lower end of the Gorge at First Falls. Remnants of the wharf and foundation are visible at the end of the grass lane leading to the Magaguadavic River tidal basin. The proximity of the site to the USA border made for convenient international commerce in the granite industry.
