Direct Relief Store

Direct Relief Store is a one-and-a-half-storey structure with multiple gable roofs built in the vernacular style. It is located on Canada Street in the centre of the village of Saint-Quentin.

Direct Relief Store is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for its societal role during the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Direct Relief Store is a good example of simple vernacular commercial architecture from the beginning of the 20th century. Now used as a private residence, this one-and-a-half-storey structure with multiple roofs was built in the vernacular style that was prevalent in the area during the Great Depression. Along with the overall massing and roof shape, some interior details have been maintained.

A precursor of social services, Direct Relief Store distributed food to families in the parish that were affected by the economic crisis. Merchandise could be obtained in exchange for coupons. Its central location was essential for easy access by the citizens in the area.
