Joseph Bartlett House

Constructed in 1850, the Joseph Bartlett House is located in Brigus and is an example of a salt-box style of construction in the Conception Bay area. This designation is confined to the footprint of the building.

The Joseph Bartlett House provides a good example of salt-box construction in Conception Bay. The salt-box style is developed from a one and a half storey house with a linhay. This style of construction was one of the earliest house forms in rural Newfoundland and is said to resemble an 18th century salt-box. The Joseph Bartlett House is one of very few salt-box houses remaining in Conception Bay.

The structure is also architecturally interesting for its balloon frame construction and the mortise and tenon construction of its windows.
