Connaught Library

Connaught Library is a Municipal Heritage Property occupying two lots at 3435 – 13th Avenue in the City of Regina. The property features a raised one-storey brick building constructed in 1930.

The heritage value of Connaught Library resides in its Georgian Classical architecture. Designed by Joseph Warburton, the property features brick pilasters at the front entrance, a projecting pavilion topped with a pediment, a hip roof with corbelled cornice, and semi-circular windows which are in groups of three on the north façade and groups of two on the east and west facades. Tyndall Stone trim highlights the entrance way, windows and eaves. Projecting an image of strength, permanency and stability, Georgian Classicism was a common style for many of Saskatchewan’s early public buildings.

The heritage value of the Connaught Library also lies in its association with the development of Regina’s public library system. In 1928, residents of the Cathedral area requested that a branch library be constructed in their neighbourhood. Completed in 1930, this building is one of the oldest branches of the Regina Public Library. Since its inception, the Connaught Library has been an integral resource for educational, cultural, and recreational services and continues to be a prominent gathering place in the community.

-those elements that speak to its status as a landmark in the community, including its positioning on its original location.
