Abigail Street House

The Abigail Street House is located at 27 Mill Street, on the south side of Mill Street, north of Church Street, in the Streetsville area, of the City of Mississauga. The one-and-a-half-storey red-brick house was constructed in circa 1850.

The property was designated, by the City of Mississauga, in 1985, for its heritage value, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act (By-law 852-85).

Situated well back from the street, the Abigail Street House is associated with the Street family. Built in circa 1850, it features an expansive front yard and it is believed to have been the house of Abigail Street who was the widow of Timothy Street, the founder of Streetsville. She lived there until her death, in 1859.

The Abigail Street House is a good representation of vernacular Ontario Regency form. The house follows the typical Ontario Regency form, with a gable roof with cornice returns and projecting eaves, one-and-a-half storeys in height and three-bays wide. The exposed brick and unlit doorway are both departures from this norm. The corbelled table frieze is an unusually early example of this motif. Other notable features include the rubble foundation, the two internal chimneys and the two rear additions, one of clapboard and one of brick. The large windows with thick wooden lugsills, straight heads, and radiating brick voussoirs complete the picture.
